What percentage of your youth are staying faithful to God in an intimate relationship with Him by the time they graduate from high school? Recent statistics say that about 40% of middle school kids lose their interest in God and by high school graduation another 40% walk away from the church. By college age, another 10% walk away from church and strong belief in God.

One of the major causes is that we do not have many strong spiritual fathers who are leading their families by word and example. The Bible teaches in Duet. 6 that parents are to teach their children there is one God and to love Him with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength. The teaching is to happen every day – when you get up in the morning, when you walk along the way, when you sit down and when you go to bed at night.

We cannot expect a Sunday school teacher or a youth leader to be responsible for the teaching that we are to do as parents. The research is showing that separating youth from their families and offering entertainment to entice them to come and remain in church is not affective. God did not separate families in the Old Testament or the New Testament. When Jesus taught, there were 5,000 men plus women and children – families sat on the hillsides and listened to Jesus teach for hours. Ephesians 6 teaches children to obey their parents. It also teaches fathers to bring up their children with discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Malachi 4:6 says “preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their father.” (NLT) Families need to sit in church together to hear the preaching of the Word. Then fathers and mothers are to make that Word come alive in the home by example and discussion.

In my book, GOD’S DESIGN FOR MARRIAGE, I have a chapter on parenting that gives instruction how to be the godly example in the home. You can order by sending a $12 check to LEM, INC. 1437 N. Denver Ave., Ste. #251, Loveland, CO 80538.
